This concept of swing tags can be misused. I frequently read blogs and posts on the Internet that clearly are using the medium to tout a product. I always feel cheated. People come to a chat room, for instance, to share information, questions and ideas with other people of like interests. Then folks come and crash the party with their profit-driven remarks. It’s easy to see through the insincere, and their self-serving behavior is actually negative branding for them in the end.
On the other hand, you have people like this woman I’m thinking of who frequently answers questions of newbies about care/behavior/health of their pet rabbits in a chat room I belong to. For her, it’s all about helping people and bunnies. She gives SO much information! Actually saves lives. There are no personal plugs, but at the very bottom her signature includes her web address, and you see she has a bunny products store. I like this lady and will probably give her some business soon.
James Burgin is another example of a sincere person who shares volumes of truly useful information — for free. It makes me want to refer everyone to him. Not only because he’s so helpful, but because the things he explains to me show his brains and knowledge.
Maybe that’s a big part of why social branding works: if you really give your knowledge away for free sometimes, the people you give it to get to see what an expert you really are. It’s kind of like getting free candy samples in the store before you have to buy. Costs the store a bit to give out the free candy, but look at how many more sales they probably make in the end! When you KNOW you are going to like it, you buy more, as the risk is taken away.

Re Jessi’s comments – there is another reason for “giving” in the sense that you mean i.e free information etc. If you keep on doing it you become an expert but at a subliminal level the person who is constantly receiving eventually feels obligated to give back.
In the “universe” as we all know – for every receiver there has to be a giver, the only thing we can’t control is the timing.
